What PN means
PN (Pression Nominale / Nominal Pressure) denotes the maximum continuous operating pressure in kg/cm² that a pipe can safely handle at 20°C over a 50-year service life. PN 6 means 6 kg/cm² (~ 0.6 MPa or 60 metres of water head).
Standard PN ratings for HDPE
IS 4984:2016 defines PN 2.5, PN 4, PN 6, PN 8, PN 10, PN 12.5 and PN 16 for HDPE water pipes. Gas pipes (IS 14333) use different pressure classes; sprinkler pipes (IS 14151) use 2.5, 4 and 6 kg/cm² classes.
Choosing PN for water supply
For rural distribution and house connections: PN 6 is standard. For zonal trunk mains under a static head of 60–80 m: PN 10. For high-pressure booster mains or industrial applications: PN 12.5 or PN 16. Always add a safety factor for surge (water hammer).
De-rating at higher temperatures
HDPE pressure ratings assume 20°C service. At 30°C the effective pressure is reduced by ~10 percent; at 40°C by ~25 percent. Above 40°C use dedicated high-temperature grades or specialised polymers like PPR.
How PN relates to wall thickness
For a given OD, PN 10 pipe has thicker walls than PN 6. As you go up in PN, cost per metre increases. Right-sizing PN is the single biggest cost lever in HDPE procurement.
